Netflix is expanding its production deal with Tyler Perry to include TV shows.

As part of the multi-year agreement, the streaming service has greenlit a new series titled Beauty in Black.

The hour-long drama follows two women from different worlds, who find themselves entangled in each other’s lives. While one woman named Kimmie is struggling to make a living after her mother kicked her out, the other woman named Mallory runs a successful business.

Perry is set to write, direct and produce the 16-episode series. Additional producers include Angi Bones and Tony Strickland for Tyler Perry Studios.

Perry and Netflix previously announced a first-look, multi-year movie deal in October 2023.

The director’s upcoming films for the platform include World War II drama Six Triple Eight starring an ensemble cast led by Kerry Washington, and the thriller Mea Culpa starring Kelly Rowland, Trevante Rhodes, and RonReaco Lee.

Perry’s previous movies for the streamer include forbidden love story A Jazzman’s Blues; the comedy A Madea Homecoming; and the thriller A Fall from Grace starring Crystal Fox, Phylicia Rashad, Bresha Webb, Mehcad Brooks, and the late Cicely Tyson.

A Fall From Grace received mixed reviews from critics, yet the film posted massive viewership numbers. It was streamed 26 million times in just the first week of its January 2020 debut. At the time, Perry thanked fans for their support.

“My heart is full. I’m grateful,” he said. “I’ve always wanted my movies to open around the world, and that was the first time, so thank you Netflix. Thank you. I saw you all around the world watching.”

The writer-director additionally has a deal with the BET+ streaming platform, which airs his shows The Oval, Bruh, and All the Queen’s Men.

Perry also signed a non-exclusive agreement with Amazon in November 2022, to write, direct and produce four movies for release on Prime Video, as previously reported.
