It was a night of long-awaited Emmy wins for Tamara Tunie, Star Jones and Tracee Ellis Ross.
All three picked up their first Emmy at the 53rd Annual Daytime Emmy Awards on Oct. 30, at the Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles.
Tunie won the trophy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Daytime Drama Series, for playing Anita Williams Dupree on CBS’ Beyond the Gates.
The daytime veteran used her acceptance speech to recognize Black actresses who came before her.
“This is the best welcome back to daytime ever,” Tunie said. “There is a host of Black actresses who paved the way for me, and I feel them as I stand here tonight, beginning with the legendary Cicely Tyson, the first Black woman to appear on a daytime television show, The Guiding Light.”
Divorce Court host Jones got emotional after winning the award for Outstanding Daytime Personality – Daily alongside the show’s bailiff, Corey Jovan.
“Look at God!” the former The View co-host said. “Fourteen times I’ve been nominated and My God!”
Meanwhile, Ross won the Outstanding Travel and Adventure Program Emmy for Roku’s Solo Traveling with Tracee Ellis Ross, which she hosts and executive produces.
“I’m an Emmy winner!” Ross said on stage.
The win came one day after her 54th birthday. She continued the celebration in a post on Instagram.
“I won an EMMY for my show! I also styled myself and did my hair! Today was fun! Happy birthday to me! Hee Heeeee,” she captioned the post.
The actress and producer previously received multiple Primetime Emmy nominations for playing Dr. Rainbow Johnson on Black-ish, but she had yet to take home a trophy.
The ceremony streamed live on the Emmys YouTube channel, instead of airing on television. Below is the full list of winners. You can watch the ceremony here.
