Lamman Rucker says working on Why Did I Get Married Again? felt like returning home.
The actor reprises his role as “Troy” in the film, which is the third installment of the Tyler Perry franchise.
Rucker discussed reuniting with his longtime castmates for the new film at a special screening in Los Angeles on Sept. 8.
“It’s a family reunion,” he said on the red carpet. “It’s like coming back to your old neighborhood that you grew up in.”
The actor has appeared in all three films, beginning with Why Did I Get Married? in 2007 and Why Did I Get Married Too? in 2010. He said slipping back into character was easy because the cast members have been friends for years.
“It’s always good fun when you get the band back together, right?” he said. “Many of us have been in touch. We’re friends. We were friends before we started this, and we’ve maintained our friendships throughout the years.”

Those close connections helped the actors pick up where they left off.
“It made it just that much simpler to slip these familiar shoes and threads back on and come back into these lives,” he explained.
The sequel reunites Rucker with Tyler Perry, Jill Scott, Sharon Leal, Tasha Smith, Michael Jai White, and Richard T. Jones.
Taraji P. Henson is among the newcomers to the franchise. Also joining the cast are Da’Vinchi, Armani Greer, Everett Osborne, Laya DeLeon Hayes, Jaden Michael, Charles L. Smith, Derrick A. King, and Sydney Winbush.
This time, the original friend group travels to Italy for a destination wedding involving Marcus (Michael Jai White) and Angela’s (Tasha Smith) daughter.
As they watch their children navigate relationships, they start to recognize familiar patterns in the younger generation.
Rucker said the new film gives fans a chance to reconnect with the original characters while being introduced to their on-screen offspring.
“You followed us along our journeys,” he said. “Now, get to know them. They’ve got their own voices. They’ve got their own lives, their own journey.”
Rucker grew up in the Washington, D.C. area and attended the Duke Ellington School of the Arts before going off to college.
He recently starred on the AllBlk series Terror Lake Drive, BET+’s The Black Hamptons, and was previously a cast member on OWN’s Greenleaf.
Now that he’s returned to the Why Did I Get Married? franchise, Rucker said it’s a “thrill” to know fans are still invested in the characters.
The new film is currently streaming on Netflix.
