California Gov. Gavin Newsom has a warning for President Donald Trump and anyone thinking about interfering in the state’s midterm elections: “California will come for you.”
In an election-eve address on his YouTube channel Nov. 2, the Democratic governor trolled Trump supporters with knee pads and threats of prosecution as voters prepared to head to the polls Tuesday.
Newsom showed off his “Trump-Series” knee pads and vowed California is not “bending a knee.” The merch is available through his Patriot Shop, which lists the knee pads for $100.
After a bit of joking, the outspoken governor turned serious.
“So, let me speak clearly and directly to anyone thinking about helping them. If you interfere with our voters, you will be prosecuted with a felony,” said Newsom. “If you tamper with our ballots, you will face justice. It doesn’t matter who gave the order.”
He added, “Meddle in California’s election and California will come for you.”
The address came just hours after the Supreme Court rejected a Trump administration request to stop California from counting about 20,000 ballots from people the administration claimed were probably not U.S. citizens.
Newsom accused Trump of plotting to “rig” the election by throwing out votes cast by people who followed the rules.
“He’s been setting this up for months and months so he can call tomorrow’s election stolen if he doesn’t get the result he likes,” Newsom said.
He warned anyone who breaks California laws will face state felony charges and a presidential pardon won’t help. “And don’t count on a pardon. The president can’t pardon you out of California justice,” he said.
Following years of complaints and questions about why it takes the state so long to count votes, Newsom said several new measures are in place to protect voters and speed up ballot counting, including:
-Passing 13 election protection bills.
-Providing $40 million to counties for staffing and ballot counting.
-Assigning a security task force to monitor misinformation and threats.
-Putting 135 lawyers on standby
Meanwhile in a Monday post on X, Trump urged Californians to support his endorsed Republican candidates, including gubernatorial nominee Steve Hilton, who is running against Democrat Xavier Becerra.
“GET OUT AND VOTE for these Great Patriots!” Trump wrote alongside a picture of the candidates. “They have my Complete and Total Endorsement and will never let you down!”
Near the end of his comments, Newsom thanked election workers and told voters not to be intimidated.
“California is ready. Every eligible vote will be counted,” he said. “So don’t let anyone scare you out of your voice. Get out there and vote.”
