Strong viewership wasn’t enough to secure a second season for Ride or Die.

Prime Video has canceled the action comedy starring Octavia Spencer and Hannah Waddingham after one season, with news of the cancellation breaking on Saturday, Sept. 19.

Deadline, which was the first outlet to report on the show’s demise, said the decision came as a “surprise” to everyone involved in the production.

The eight-episode first season premiered on July 15 and became one of the most-watched shows across all streaming platforms.

In a July press release, Amazon announced Ride or Die was the No. 1 original series on Prime Video for the week of July 20-26. That week, it led Elle, Off Campus, Adarsh Baal Vidyalaya, and See You at Work Tomorrow! in Prime Video’s global Top 5.

Ride or Die reportedly logged 927K views, twice as many as Legally Blonde prequel Elle drew in the U.S. over its first two days.

The canceled buddy comedy centers on best friends Debbie Claybourne (Spencer) and Judith Burton (Waddingham), who believe they know everything about each other. But Debbie soon discovers Judith has been hiding a dangerous secret — she’s a killer for hire.

Bill Nighy, Ed Skrein, Sylvia Hoeks, Calam Lynch, Savannah Steyn, Jamie Parker, and Jacky Ido also have roles on the show.

Tessa Coates created the series and executive produces with showrunner Matt Miller and director Peyton Reed.

Oscar winner Octavia Spencer and Emmy winner Hannah Waddingham are executive producers alongside Andy Muschietti, Barbara Muschietti, Irene Yeung, Brian Clisham and Stephanie Kluft.

The show is produced by Paramount Television Studios and Amazon MGM Studios.

There may still be some hope for the comedy. Paramount Television Studios is reportedly shopping Ride or Die to other networks and streaming platforms.
