‘Ride or Die’ Canceled, but the Hit Comedy May Not Be Dead Yet

Strong viewership wasn’t enough to land a second season of Ride or Die.

Prime Video has canceled the action comedy starring Octavia Spencer and Hannah Waddingham after one season.

News of the cancellation broke on Saturday, Sept. 19. Deadline, which was the first outlet to report the news, said the decision not to renew the series came as a “surprise” to everyone involved with the show.

The eight-episode first season premiered on July 15 and became one of the most-watched shows across all streaming platforms.

In a July press release, Amazon announced Ride or Die was the No. 1 original series on Prime Video for the week of July 20-26. That week it led Elle, Off Campus, Adarsh Baal Vidyalaya, and See You at Work Tomorrow! with Prime Video audiences across the globe.

Ride or Die reportedly logged 927K views, twice as many as Elle drew in the U.S. over its first two days.

The buddy comedy centers on a socialite played by Oscar winner Spencer and international assassin portrayed by Waddingham.

The two co-star as best friends Debbie Claybourne (Spencer) and Judith Burton (Waddingham), who believe they know everything about each other. But Debbie soon discovers Judith has been hiding a dangerous secret: She’s a killer for hire.

Bill Nighy, Ed Skrein, Sylvia Hoeks, Calam Lynch, Savannah Steyn, Jamie Parker, and Jacky Ido also star.

Tessa Coates created the series and executive produces alongside showrunner Matt Miller and director Peyton Reed. Spencer, Waddingham, Andy Muschietti, Barbara Muschietti, Irene Yeung, Brian Clisham and Stephanie Kluft are also executive producers.

The series is produced by Paramount Television Studios and Amazon MGM Studios.

There may still be some hope for the show. Paramount Television Studios is reportedly shopping Ride or Die to other networks and streaming platforms.
