Ice Cube’s long-awaited Friday sequel has found its director.

Lawrence Lamont, the filmmaker behind the hit comedy One of Them Days, has been tapped to direct Last Friday.

The Hollywood Reporter broke the news on Tuesday, Oct. 27. Lamont reposted the article on Instagram and included a lengthy statement about helming the fourth installment of the New Line Cinema franchise.

“Growing up in Detroit, I remember watching Friday and feeling the impact it had on me. It was more than a comedy. It was a cultural phenomenon that helped reshape Black cinema and left an undeniable mark in film history,” he wrote. “Never in my wildest dreams could I have imagined that one day I’d help reignite this legendary franchise!”

He thanked Cube, New Line and the producers for trusting him with the project.

“I hope to honor everything that made these films special while bringing my own vision, heart, and perspective to the story,” Lamont added.

The filmmaker got his start directing music videos and frequently collaborated with fellow Detroit native Big Sean. He later directed four episodes of the HBO Max comedy series Rap Sh!t, created by Issa Rae.

Rae then signed him up to direct her film One of Them Days, starring Keke Palmer and SZA.

Lamont follows F. Gary Gray, Steve Carr and Marcus Raboy, who directed the previous three Friday films.

The first movie arrived in 1995, starring Ice Cube and Chris Tucker as unemployed friends Craig and Smokey who are navigating a chaotic day in South Central Los Angeles. Next Friday followed in 2000, introducing Mike Epps as Day-Day, before Friday After Next opened in 2002.

Kym Whitley has already confirmed she’ll return as Auntie Suga. During a recent interview with Urban Hollywood 411, the actress joked that she was preparing to get back into her character’s revealing wardrobe.

“I told Ice Cube I’m doing my little sit-ups right now to get in one of those little outfits,” she said.

Last Friday has received a California state tax credit and will film in Southern California. Ice Cube is set to write, produce and is starring in the film.

The hip-hop mogul said keeping the production local would provide work “for more than 180 cast and crew members.”
