Golden Globes Nominations 2024: ‘A Thousand and One,’ ‘Origin,’ and ‘Swarm’ Snubbed

Golden Globes Snubs

The 2024 Golden Globes nominations are out and there are some surprising snubs — with A Thousand and One, Origin, and Swarm shut out of the competition.

After picking up a Gotham Award, the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival, and two Independent Spirit Awards nominations, A Thousand and One was snubbed by Golden Globes voters. The Harlem-set drama from director A.V. Rockwell stars Teyana Taylor as an impoverished single mom who kidnaps her six-year-old son.

Director Ava DuVernay’s critically acclaimed drama Origin, about a writer researching racism and oppression while dealing with heartbreaking personal losses, was also snubbed. The film stars Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, Jon Bernthal, and Niecy Nash.

Donald Glover and Janine Nabers’ hit limited series Swarm, about a young woman with a dangerous obsession with a pop star, was shut out of the competition. Despite being ignored by Globes voters, the drama is nominated for three Emmy Awards (which are delayed because of the Hollywood strikes), including lead actress in a limited series for Dominique Fishback.

After receiving Globes love last year, Abbott Elementary stars Sheryl Lee Ralph, Janelle James, and Tyler James Williams were left off the list of nominees Monday morning.

Barbie leads the nominations with nine nods, but America Ferrara was overlooked for her breakout performance as Mattel employee Gloria, who helps Barbie in the real world.

Taraji P. Henson’s name was missing when the best supporting film actress nominations were announced. Henson sings and delivers a knock-out performance as Shug Avery in The Color Purple remake. Despite overlooking Henson, Globes voters nominated Fantasia Barrino and Danielle Brooks for their roles in the film.

This Is Us alum Sterling K. Brown commands all of his scenes in American Fiction, yet he was snubbed by Globes voters. The Emmy winner plays Clifford Ellison, a pill-popping plastic surgeon whose life has spiraled out of control after he got divorced and came out as gay.

The Golden Globes will be handed out on Sunday, Jan. 7, 2024. The awards air live on CBS and stream on Paramount+.
