The crowd is thirsty for blood in the first trailer for Gladiator II, and Denzel Washington prepares a gladiator for battle.
The Oscar-winning actor plays Macrinus, keeper of the gladiators, in director Ridley Scott’s sequel to his 2000 historical epic starring Russell Crowe and Joaquin Phoenix.
The sequel is set years after the events of Gladiator.

Irish actor Paul Mescal leads the cast as Lucius, who is forced into slavery following an invasion led by a Roman general, and fights his way through the ranks as a gladiator.
“You will be my instrument,” Macrinus (Washington) tells Lucius (Mescal) in the trailer.
Moments later, an epic battle unfolds in the arena.
The film also stars Pedro Pascal, Joseph Quinn, Fred Hechinger, Lior Raz, Derek Jacobi, and Connie Nielsen.
Producers include Douglas Wick, Ridley Scott, Lucy Fisher, Michael Pruss, David Franzoni. David Scarpa wrote the script for the sequel.
The first film received 12 Oscar nominations and won five, including best picture.
Gladiator II arrives in theaters on Nov. 22, 2024.
