Bill Burr was panned and praised for his opening monologue on this weekend’s episode of Saturday Night Live.
The comedian delivered a searing set that touched on everything from cancel culture, to “woke” white women, and LGBTQ Pride month.

Burr, who is no stranger to controversy for his acerbic style, started out by mentioning the COVID-19 pandemic and SNL‘s masked studio audience.
“I like people who wear masks, that’s good. You’re listening to the eggheads, the people we all cheated off of in high school,” he said, before admitting he’s not bothered by people who don’t wear masks. “Take out your grandparents, take out your weak cousin with asthma. I don’t care. It’s your decision.”

Burr, 52, admitted he’ll probably get canceled for the set.
“How stupid is that canceled thing? They’re literally running out of people to cancel,” he quipped. “They’re going after dead people now. They’re trying to cancel John Wayne. It’s like yeah dude, God did that 40 years ago.”
He then joked that white women have taken over the “woke movement” following George Floyd’s death in May.
“The way white women somehow hijacked the woke movement, generals around the world should be analyzing this,” he said. “The woke movement was supposed to be about people of color not getting opportunities, the at-bats that they deserve, finally making that happen. And it was about that for about eight seconds and then somehow white women swung their Gucci-booted feet over the fence of oppression and stuck themselves at the front of the line.”
“I don’t want to speak ill of my b–ches here,” he added, then moved on to Pride month, which is celebrated in June.
“That’s a little long, don’t you think? For a group of people that were never enslaved,” he said. “How did they get all of June? Dude, Black people were actually enslaved. They get February. They get 28 days of overcast weather, sun goes down at 4 in the afternoon, everyone is shivering, no one wants to go on the parade. Look, how about you hook ‘em up with July? These are equator people. Give them the sun for 31 days!”
The monologue drew mixed reactions on social media.
“It’s amazing Bill Burr is trying to be woke while being a misogynist POS. White Male Privilege is strong within this Louis CK clone,” one person wrote.
“Bill Burr with the gay pride joke… uhhhh not it. The crowd doesn’t even know if they should laugh or not,” another viewer tweeted.
“Umm, @billburr yeah you’re cancelled. How did you manage to be sexist, racist, AND homophobic in under 5 minutes?” someone else wrote.
Still, others found Burr’s set entertaining. “Bill Burr could do an entire half hour berating me personally, talking shit about my mom, and making fun of my dead relatives and I’d still laugh to tears,” one person tweeted.
Another fan said Burr got the exact reaction he wanted.
“Bill Burr makes valid points about cancel culture trying to cancel EVERYTHING IN SIGHT. Then delivers jokes designed to prove that exact point. And twitter took the bait. Comedy is not for you. It’s about you,” the person tweeted.
Someone else said Burr can’t be racist because his wife is Black.
“I’d bet the white people didn’t know @billburr was successfully married to a beautiful black sister!!! Hahaha, “Karen’s” that mad cause he told the truth. That opening was funny! We love him!” the person tweeted.
