Shonda Rhimes Series ‘Bridgerton’ Gets Netflix Premiere Date and Trailer

Bridgerton Netflix from Shonda Rhimes

This week Netflix released a teaser trailer for Bridgerton, the first Shondaland for Netflix series from producer and writer Shonda Rhimes.

Inspired by the bestselling novels, the eight episode period drama created by Chris Van Dusen (Scandal, Grey’s Anatomy), follows Daphne Bridgerton, the eldest daughter of the powerful Bridgerton family, as she debuts on the Regency London marriage market.

Daphne becomes the subject of criticism from the high society scandal sheet written by Lady Whisteldown, when Daphne catches the interest of London’s most eligible bachelor, the Duke of Hastings. Although Bridgerton and the Duke say they want nothing to do with each other at the start, sparks seem to eventually fly.

Bridgerton is the first series out of Rhimes’ multi-year deal with the streaming platform. The series stars Phoebe Dynevor and Regé-Jean Page, and the mysterious Lady Whistledown will be voiced by Julie Andrews.

Much in line with Rhimes’ previous works, this new series is set to be “romantic, scandalous, and quick-witted,” Netflix said in a statement.

Before joining Netflix, Rhimes created some of ABC’s most popular shows, including Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal, and she executive produced How to Get Away with Murder.

After 15 years at ABC, Rhimes signed on with Netflix for a reported deal worth $150 million, one of the largest contracts in TV history.

Bridgerton premieres Dec. 25 on Netflix. Watch the trailer below.
