Lisa Velez, better known as chart-topping singer Lisa Lisa, is getting a Lifetime biopic.

Velez, who was part of 1980s supergroup Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam, has fully authorized the film titled Can You Feel the Beat: The Lisa Lisa Story, and will executive produce and star in the movie as her mother.

The film follows then-15-year-old Lisa Velez, a Puerto Rican girl from Hell’s Kitchen who endures sexism and racism while hiding her own breast cancer diagnosis to become the first Latina artist to appear on multiple Billboard charts, thanks to the songs “Can You Feel The Beat” and “Lost in Emotion.”

The biopic will also look at Velez’s friendship with backup singer Toni Ménage (played by All American and Empire star Bre Z). The two best friends, “refuse to allow themselves to be destroyed by the entertainment business and give up on their dreams.”

New York radio legend Angie Martinez has a role in the film as well.

In addition to Lisa Velez, Cult Jam consisted of vocalist , guitarist/bassist Alex Moseley, and drummer/keyboardist Mike Hughes.

Assembled and produced by Full Force, the group released several hits between 1985 and 1991, including “Let the Beat Hit ‘Em,” “Head to Toe,” and “I Wonder If I Take You Home.”

Velez paved the way for future Latina artists including Selena and Jennifer Lopez.

Can You Feel the Beat: The Lisa Lisa Story was helmed by Tailiah Breon and written by Rebecca Murga, rounding out the film’s all-female writing and directing team.

Along with Velez and Ménage, executive producers include Tracy “Twinkie” Byrd, Abbey Sibucao, Ron Robinson, and Eric Tomosunas.

With a release date sometime in 2025, the movie is part of Lifetime’s “Voices of a Lifetime” slate that also includes the authorized Mary J. Blige biopic, Family Affair.
