Fans hoping to see a Good Burger sequel may not have to wait much longer.
Kenan Thompson said in a new interview the follow-up to his iconic 1997 film with Kel Mitchell will likely begin production “soon.”
“We’re getting really close on Good Burger 2,” Thompson told Entertainment Tonight over the weekend. “It’s gonna happen, and I think it’s gonna happen soon. We’re gonna figure out when the pocket of time will be to shoot it, but it’s gonna happen.”
The Saturday Night Live veteran added that the script is written and it’s “so funny.”
In fact, Thompson said he and longtime collaborator Mitchell, had a reading together and it was just like old times.
“Kel has not missed a step,” he said. “It’s like old slippers, and that character is just ripe for jokes. We read like, over 100 pages and laughed the whole time. It was so much fun.”
Good Burger premiered in 1997. The film followed an absent-minded teenager and his new co-worker who tried to save the aging burger joint where they worked from going out of business after a new burger restaurant opened across the street.
The cast also included Sinbad, Shar Jackson, and the late Abe Vigoda. The comedy was directed by Brian Robbins.
The film had a reported production budget of $8.5 million and made three times that at the box office.
