When the nominations were announced for the 2025 Golden Globes on Monday morning, The Piano Lesson and Blitz were missing from the list.

The Piano Lesson has received a string of awards — including an ensemble trophy at the Gotham Awards; a breakthrough director honor from the Hamptons International Film Festival; and multiple acting awards from critics groups honoring Danielle Deadwyler for her performance in the film.

The Netflix drama about a brother who wants to sell a family heirloom piano in 1930s Pittsburgh and his sister opposed to a sale, also stars John David Washington, Samuel L. Jackson, Ray Fisher, Michael Potts, Erykah Badu, and Corey Hawkins.

The film is adapted from the Pulitzer Prize-winning play by August Wilson, and directed by Denzel Washington’s son Malcolm Washington, marking his directorial debut.

Deadwyler has received widespread praise and is ranked as one of the top 5 contenders in the supporting actress Oscars race on the Gold Derby awards website.

Director Steve McQueen’s World War II drama Blitz also failed to pick up a single nomination.

The Apple Original Film centers on a 9-year-old biracial boy in wartime London, whose mother sends him to the English countryside to keep him safe from bombings by the Nazis. The film stars Elliott Heffernan and Saoirse Ronan.

McQueen has picked up awards for directing the drama from the Middleburg Film Festival and the Critics Choice Celebration of Cinema and Television.

But he did not make the cut in the directing category for the Golden Globes. The nominees are Jacques Audiard (Emilia Pérez), Sean Baker (Anora), Edward Berger (Conclave), Brady Corbet (The Brutalist), Coralie Fargeat (The Substance), and Payal Kapadia (All We Imagine As Light).

The 82nd Golden Globes will air live nationwide from the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills on CBS and stream on Paramount+ Sunday, Jan. 5, 2025 at 5 p.m. PT/8 p.m. ET.
