Viola Davis, Damson Idris, Regina King, Lashana Lynch and Thuso Mbedu bring an African fantasy world to life in the first trailer for Children of Blood and Bone.

The newly released Paramount Pictures teaser offers a glimpse of the cast preparing for battle in the mythical African kingdom of Orïsha.

“Orïsha was once a land where magic flowed through our people,” Lynch says in the video. “But those who feared our power took it away from us.”

The action-packed teaser then unfolds with a kidnapping and fighters training to rise up against a brutal king played by Chiwetel Ejiofor.

“For years I have trained you because I believe you are the one,” Davis tells a  young fighter played by Mbedu.

The star-studded cast also includes Tosin Cole, Idris Elba, Cynthia Erivo, Amandla Stenberg, Zackary Momoh, and Richard Mofe-Damijo.

“In the epic fantasy world of Orïsha, a young woman goes on a quest to reclaim the magic that was violently stolen from her people. She and her brother ally with the daughter and son of the king to fight back against his brutal rule,” the official description reads.

Additional cast members are Saniyya Sidney, Diaana Babnicova, Bukky Bakray, Ayra Starr, Shamz Garuba, Kola Bodunde, Pamilerin Afolake Ayodeji, and Tèmítópé Fágbénlé.

Directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood (The Woman King and Love & Basketball), the film is based on a bestselling fantasy novel of the same name by Nigerian-American author Tomi Adeyemi.

A featurette released ahead of the trailer includes an interview with Prince-Bythewood, who said she wanted to “create a world” that would inspire audiences. The filmmaker added that the movie was made with “love, and respect, and passion.”

Executive producers include Jeff Waxman, Jennifer Madeloff, Tomi Adeyemi, Reggie Rock Bythewood, Marty Bowen, Pete Chiappetta, Anthony Tittanegro, Andrew Lary, Sophie Cassidy and Zack Conroy.
