There are lots of new rules for the 2026 Oscars.

The film academy’s board of governors has approved updates to the Oscars’ rules and regulations for 2026, including a major change to the voting process, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced in a press release on Monday.

Starting with the 98th ceremony, all voting members will be required to view every nominated film before casting their final ballots.

Previously, that standard only applied to certain categories like documentary and shorts.

An academy representative told Entertainment Weekly members’ viewing data will be tracked through the Academy Screening Room, which is an internal viewing platform.

Members must also complete a “seen elsewhere” form to verify any films watched outside the platform.

“If you have not viewed a title, the award category will be inaccessible (greyed out),” the academy said.

In its press announcement, the organization noted that it is also adding an achievement in casting category, which will be awarded for the first time.

A shortlist of 10 films will be selected in a preliminary round, followed by a “bake-off” presentation featuring Q&As with the nominees.

The academy also clarified its position on generative AI, stating that its use “neither helps nor harms” a film’s chances. Each branch will still weigh human authorship in its voting process.

For best picture consideration, films released between Jan. 1 and June 30, 2025, must submit proof of Producers Guild of America (PGA) certification or awards-only status by Sept. 10. Films released in the second half of the year must submit by Nov. 13.

This year, Anora dominated the 97th Oscars, taking home five awards — best director, best actress, best original screenplay, best film editing, and best picture.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is home to a global membership of more than 10,500 film industry artists and leaders.

The 98th Oscars ceremony is scheduled to take place on Sunday, March 15, 2026, at 7 p.m. ET / 4 p.m. PT on ABC.
