Anora dominated the competition Sunday night at the 97th Oscars, picking up five awards.

The strip club comedy-drama, which tells the story of a young woman from Brooklyn who marries the son of a Russian oligarch, earned Mikey Madison the best actress trophy.

The indie film’s writer-director Sean Baker was a big winner as well, and took home the trophies for best director, best original screenplay, best film editing, and best picture.

There were also some historic firsts at the ceremony.

Industry veteran Paul Tazewell made history when he won the costume design Oscar for his work on Wicked.

During his acceptance speech, Tazewell said: “Thank you academy for this very significant honor. I’m the first Black man to receive a costume design award.”

Zoe Saldaña, who played a lawyer in the musical crime drama Emilia Pérez, became the first Dominican American to win an Oscar when she picked up the supporting actress trophy.

“My grandmother came to this country in 1961,” Saldaña said when accepting her award. “I am a proud child of immigrant parents. With dreams and dignity and hardworking hands. I am the first American of Dominican origin to accept an Academy Award, and I know I will not be the last. I hope.”

The night included a tribute to Quincy Jones, led by Oprah Winfrey and Whoopi Goldberg, who worked with the music legend four decades ago on The Color Purple (1985).

“When we’re talking about Black excellence, we’re talking about Quincy,” Goldberg said, calling the late songwriter, producer and composer “a true American legend.”

Comedian Conan O’Brien hosted the ceremony. In his opening monologue, O’Brien joked about the resurfaced tweet scandal surrounding best actress nominee and Emilia Pérez star Karla Sofía Gascón.

Anora uses the F-word 479 times — that’s three more than the record set by Karla Sofía Gascón’s publicist,” O’Brien quipped. Gascón was shown in the audience laughing at the joke.

The awards took place at the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood in Los Angeles.
