Sinners was an even bigger Easter weekend hit than initially projected.

The vampire thriller from director Ryan Coogler, which featured Michael B. Jordan playing twins, opened at No. 1 with a final box office tally of $48 million, according to Box Office Mojo.

That’s better than the estimated $45.6 million theaters reported they expected the film to earn as they added up ticket sales on Sunday.

The thriller performed especially well in major metropolitan markets, according to Exhibitor Relations Co.

The entertainment research and data firm reported AMC Lincoln Square in New York City sold the most tickets to the film, out of all theaters in North America. The movie was also popular in Atlanta, Houston, and theaters around California.

Set in the Jim Crow-era South during the 1930s, Sinners follows twin brothers Smoke and Stack, both played by Jordan, who return to their hometown in Mississippi after spending time in Chicago’s criminal underworld. Their plan to open a juke joint for the Black community takes a dark turn when they encounter supernatural forces.

As previously reported, the thriller is Coogler’s first non-franchise film since his 2013 debut Fruitvale Station, which also starred Jordan.

The pair have since collaborated on Creed (2015) and Black Panther (2018), with Jordan crediting their decade-long partnership as a major part of his development as an actor. Longtime fans of the actor may remember him playing teenage drug dealer Wallace on The Wire in 2002.

Sinners was produced by Coogler, along with Sev Ohanian and Zinzi Coogler.

Critics have responded favorably, giving the film a 98 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes.

The cast also includes Hailee Steinfeld, Jack O’Connell, Wunmi Mosaku, Jayme Lawson, Omar Benson Miller, and Delroy Lindo.

The Minecraft Movie came in second place at the box office, while faith based The King of Kings took third place over the holiday weekend.
