Passion, secrets, and cartel crime unfold in Netflix’s trailer for Emilia Pérez.
The streaming giant released the official trailer on Sept. 30, for the musical starring Zoe Saldaña, Selena Gomez and Karla Sofía Gascón.
According to Netflix’s Tudum website, Emilia Pérez follows the story of high-powered lawyer Rita (played by Saldaña), who takes on an unexpected assignment, helping a Mexican cartel leader, portrayed by Gascón, fake their death and undergo sex-reassignment operations.
That decision changes not just the lives of Rita and Emilia, but also that of Emilia’s wife, Jessi (Selena Gomez).

“It was described to me as this film noir that didn’t really exist in any of the conventional kind of genres, but it was a musical,” Saldaña told Tudum. “It was actually an opera, and based in a crime world, but there was going to be a sense of justice, and validation, and sanctification. And I was just like, ‘What?’ I had to read it more than once. And then, I couldn’t stop thinking about it.”
In the trailer, you see Saldaña dancing atop a dinner table while Gomez is seen in a moment of vulnerability among a crowd of dancers.
The film also features Adriana Paz as Epifanía and Edgar Ramírez as Gustavo.
According to IndieWire, Emilia Pérez is a festival darling, earning awards including the Cannes Jury Prize and joint Cannes Best Actress Prize for its four leading stars: Gascón, Saldaña, Gomez, and Paz. Additionally, the film received the Cannes Soundtrack Award, with music composed by Clément Ducol and Camille.
The film also marks Selena Gomez’s acting debut in a Spanish-language film.
The musical is directed by Jacques Audiard, who co-wrote the screenplay with Thomas Bidegain, Nicolas Livecchi, and Léa Mysius.
Emilia Pérez premieres in select theaters on Nov. 1, and will stream Nov. 13 on Netflix.
