Beyond the Gates, the first Black daytime soap opera in over three decades is coming back for a second season.
CBS announced the renewal in a press release on Monday, May 12, saying the program has improved viewership in its time period by 48 percent since it debuted in February.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the series drew 2.28 million cross-platform viewers in its debut week, a 78 percent increase over the same timeslot performance by The Talk the previous year.
Season-to-date the soap averages 1.82 million viewers, with 67 percent of viewership coming from all platforms, per CBS.
The series is the first new daytime soap to launch on network television since NBC’s Passions debuted in 1999.
Beyond the Gates follows the Duprees, a powerful and affluent Black family living in a gated community in a Maryland suburb outside Washington, D.C. Hollywood veterans Tamara Tunie and Clifton Davis star as heads of the family.
The cast also includes Daphnee Duplaix, Karla Mosley, Alex Alegria, Lauren Buglioli, Brandon Claybon, Timon Kyle Durrett, Sean Freeman, Ben Gavin, Marquita Goings, Jibre Hordges, Jen Jacob, Trisha Mann-Grant, Mike Manning, RhonniRose Mantilla, Ambyr Michelle, Colby Muhammad and Arielle Prepetit.
The soap opera premiered on Feb. 24 and airs weekdays from 2:00–3:00 p.m. ET / 1:00–2:00 p.m. PT on CBS. It also streams on Paramount+.
One month after the premiere, there was a casting change when actor Maurice Johnson was replaced by Keith D. Robinson in the role of Dr. Ted Richardson.
As previously reported, BET began airing encore episodes of the show in March to introduce it to a broader audience.
The show was initially titled The Gates when it received a series order in April 2024.
Michele Val Jean, an award-winning writer on The Bold & the Beautiful, General Hospital, and Ambitions is the writer, showrunner and executive producer.
Beyond the Gates was developed in a partnership between CBS Studios and the NAACP.
