Actor and comedian Sinbad is stepping back into the spotlight nearly five years after he suffered a debilitating stroke, with a role in Tyler Perry’s latest film Straw.
Sinbad, Born David Adkins, stars alongside Taraji P. Henson in the new Netflix thriller.
During a screening of the film in New York City on June 3, Perry praised the comedian in an interview with Entertainment Tonight.
“It’s so important to me, as a man, that men want to support and take care of their families,” Perry told ET. “I know it’s been really difficult for him, so to give him this opportunity made me feel amazing. I’m really excited for him. And he delivered.”

Straw follows Janiyah (Henson), a struggling single mother whose life begins to unravel after she’s evicted and left unable to afford her ailing daughter’s medication.
The thriller also stars Sherri Shepherd, Teyana Taylor, Glynn Turman, Rockmond Dunbar, and Mike Merrill.
Perry wrote, directed, and co-produced Straw with Tony L. Strickland and Angi Bones.
Sinbad, 68, appears in the film in his first major role since his family announced he suffered a stroke in November 2020.
Family members have kept fans informed through a website providing health updates and asking for donations to support the comedian’s recovery.
In May 2024, Sinbad was honored at the Netflix Is a Joke Fest, with proceeds benefiting the Sinbad Special Needs Trust.
The comedian rose to fame in the late 1980s and 1990s with his stand-up work and television appearances. He’s best known for his HBO specials and his starring role on the Fox sitcom The Sinbad Show.
He’s also known for roles in Moesha, The Cosby Show, Showtime at the Apollo, and a recurring voice role on Disney Junior’s The Lion Guard.
Sinbad will next be seen in Straw, which begins streaming on Netflix, Friday, June 6.
