Wanda and Leon are back and ready to build something lasting, but street politics could pull them apart on The Drop: A Snowfall Saga.
FX announced the premiere date and plot details for the Snowfall spinoff earlier today, saying the eight-episode series is scheduled to debut on Sept. 8.
The drama follows Wanda Bell (Gail Bean) and Leon Simmons (Isaiah John) as they look to reinvent themselves in 1990s Los Angeles amid fallout from the crack epidemic, which is fueling the rise of West Coast rap.
Wanda believes hip hop is the future and she’s looking to become a player in the game.
She lands an internship with former D-boy Darryl “DG” Grant (Brandon Mychal Smith), and puts together a “ragtag group” of performers hoping to make a name for themselves.
But finding success won’t be easy for Wanda, who must navigate the shady side of the music industry and street politics. She has a plan and gets help from her cousins Lamar (Asante Blackk) and James (Peyton Alex Smith), and “volatile local rapper” Artillery (Simmie “Buddy” Sims III).
Although this new world causes problems with Leon, “who has vowed to leave the streets for good and chase down his own atonement through his free legal clinic,” according to the official description.
Ambition and survival could push the two apart if they’re not careful.
The cast also includes Mykelti Williamson, Nicki Micheaux, Brandon Mychal Smith, Isidora Goreshter, Eric Balfour, Richard Portnow, Zaire Adams, Demetrius Grosse and Quincy Chad.
Snowfall was created by the late John Singleton, alongside Eric Amadio, and Dave Andron. The crime drama explored the crack cocaine epidemic in 1980s South Central Los Angeles. It debuted in 2017 and concluded in 2023.
The new series comes from executive producer Malcolm Spellman (Empire and Bel-Air) and Snowfall executive producers Dave Andron, Thomas Schlamme, Julie DeJoie, Michael London, and Trevor Engelson. FX Productions is the producer.
The Drop: A Snowfall Saga premieres Tuesday, Sept. 8 at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT on FX and Hulu. One new episode will be available weekly following the premiere.
