The Color Purple tells the coming-of-age story of a group of Black women living in rural Georgia in the 1930s, who relied on their sisterhood as they dealt with hardship and abuse.

The novel was first published in 1982 and won a Pulitzer Prize. In 1985, it was adapted into a feature film directed by Steven Spielberg. Whoopi Goldberg led the cast of the Warner Bros. film as Celie, who was physically, sexually and verbally abused. Oprah Winfrey co-starred as Sofia and Margaret Avery played Shug. The film was nominated for 11 Academy Awards.

The musical version premiered on Broadway in 2005 and went on to win a Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical.
