Oprah Winfrey gave audiences at CinemaCon a sneak peek at Warner Bros.’ upcoming remake of The Color Purple.
Winfrey introduced the first trailer on Tuesday at the gathering in Las Vegas and told the audience the movie musical is “not your mama’s Color Purple,” according to The Hollywood Reporter. The entertainment mogul added that the film can only be fully experienced on the big screen and described it as having “magical realism” and “wholesome family goodness.”
She was joined by some of the film’s cast, including Fantasia Barrino who plays Celie, Danielle Brooks who co-stars as Sofia, and with Taraji P. Henson who portrays Shug.

As previously reported, H.E.R., Corey Hawkins, Halle Bailey, and Ciara also have roles in the film. Ghanian filmmaker Blitz Bazawule (The Burial of Kojo, Black Is King) is directing.
Winfrey, who is a producer on the movie, had a bit of fun with the cast as they described their outfits, including her own purple suit, in a video she posted on Instagram.
She captioned the post: “So happy to bring the first look of the #TheColorPurple to @cinemacon today! These terrific women brought IT during filming —@tasiasword as Celie, @tarajiphenson as Shug, @daniebb3 as Sofia — and now are bringing IT in the fashion department.”
Fantasia also shared pictures of the cast on Instagram and let fans know the movie is coming soon.
Based on Alice Walker’s book and the musical adaptation of the novel, the theatrical remake is expected to be a celebration of sisterhood with a modern twist.
The Color Purple tells the coming-of-age story of a group of Black women — Celie and her two friends — living in rural Georgia in the 1930s. Winfrey played Sofia in the 1985 Warner Bros. theatrical version from director Steven Spielberg. Whoopi Goldberg and Margaret Avery also starred.
The novel was first published in 1982 and won a Pulitzer Prize. In 1985, it was adapted into a movie directed by Spielberg, which was nominated for 11 Academy Awards. The Color Purple musical premiered on Broadway in 2005 and went on to win a Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical in 2016.
The Color Purple will hit theaters on Dec. 25, 2023.
