LaKeith Stanfield turns to crime in an effort to make a name for himself in the trailer for The Book of Clarence.

The biblical-era epic follows a streetwise man named Clarence (Stanfield), who tries to capitalize on the rise of Jesus Christ by claiming to be a new Messiah with powers to heal the sick.

“I can just replicate what he does. Imagine the money people will give us,” Clarence says in the trailer.

“I’m not a bad person, I’m just playing the cards I was dealt,” he insists.

When he’s arrested for fraud, Clarence faces a life or death decision.

The cast also includes Omar Sy, Anna Diop, RJ Cyler, David Oyelowo, Micheal Ward, Alfre Woodard. Teyana Taylor, Caleb McLaughlin, Eric Kofi-Abrefa, Marianne Jean-Baptiste, James McAvoy, and Benedict Cumberbatch.

The film is written and directed by Jeymes Samuel (The Harder They Fall).

Samuel produced the drama alongside Shawn Carter, James Lassiter, and Tendo Nagenda.

The film will be accompanied by a soundtrack featuring new music from Samuel, Jay-Z, Lil Wayne, and Kid Cudi.

The Book of Clarence is a film that I wanted to make for many years,” Samuel said in a statement. “While I was working on The Harder They Fall and all my other projects, the story and the music for The Book of Clarence was always there percolating in my mind.”

The lead single from the soundtrack is titled “Hallelujah Heaven.” It comes from Samuel and features Lil Wayne, Buju Banton & Shabba Ranks. Roc Nation released the track earlier today.

The Book of Clarence arrives in theaters on Jan. 12, 2024.

The Sony Tristar and Legendary Pictures film debuted to positive reviews at the BFI London Film Festival in October.
