Tyler Perry is teaming up once again with Taraji P. Henson, this time for the upcoming Netflix film Straw.

Henson leads the cast of the movie about a single mother facing challenges in a “world that seems indifferent to her existence,” Netflix said in a press release on Wednesday, June 5.

The cast also includes Sherri Shepherd (Precious, 30 Rock); Teyana Taylor (A Thousand and One); Glynn Turman (Rustin, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom); Sinbad (Atlanta, A Different World); Rockmond Dunbar (9-1-1, Prison Break); and Mike Merrill (The Black Hamptons).

Henson and Perry previously worked together on the films The Family That Preys (2008), I Can Do Bad All By Myself (2009), and Acrimony (2018).

The Oscar-nominated actress, who has been vocal about the challenges Black women face in obtaining equal pay in Hollywood, said in a 2022 speech at Howard University that Perry was the first filmmaker to pay her her worth.

“He was the first to give me a fair wage to star in his movie. And it’s because of him, not an Oscar, that I never had to take another movie project at the rock bottom,” Henson said about Perry.

The filmmaker is writing the script for Straw, directing and producing the project alongside Angi Bones and Tony Strickland.

Here’s the official description for the film: “A single mother faces a series of unfortunate events that lead her down an unexpected path. Struggling against circumstances beyond her control, she becomes entangled in a situation she never imagined. Fueled by desperation, she finds herself at the center of suspicion in a world that seems indifferent to her existence.”

Straw is the latest movie out of Perry’s creative partnership with Netflix. The writer-director also recently expanded his deal with the streamer to produce faith-based films with DeVon Franklin.

A premiere date will be announced later.
