‘Sinners’ Surges Past Expectations for Box Office Win

Sinners (Warner Bros.)

Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan’s Sinners surpassed expectations for a win at the Easter weekend box office.

The supernatural vampire thriller is on track to open in first place with a projected $45.6 million from 3,308 theaters in the U.S. and Canada, Comscore reported Sunday.

Thanks to strong reviews, the thriller edged past A Minecraft Movie, which days earlier was expected to hold onto the top spot for a third straight weekend.

Set in 1930s Jim Crow-era South, Sinners follows twin brothers Smoke and Stack (Jordan) who return to their Mississippi hometown for a fresh start.  After learning how the criminal underworld works from mobsters in Chicago, they plan to open a juke joint for Black folks in the South. But the brothers soon learn evil forces are waiting in the wings.

The cast also includes Hailee Steinfeld, Wunmi Mosaku, Jayme Lawson, Saul Williams, Delroy Lindo, Andrene Ward-Hammond, Li Jun Li, Tenaj L. Jackson, and Omar Benson Miller.

Coogler and Jordan have proven a winning combination after previously teaming up on the award-winning Fruitvale Station (2013), Creed (2015), and Black Panther (2018).

Critics praised their latest collaboration, giving Sinners a Rotten Tomatoes score of 98 percent.

Justin Chang of NPR described the film as “richly textured and gorgeous to watch.”

Kathia Woods of The Philadelphia Tribune described the thriller as “deeply rooted” in African American “cultural representation.”

Katie Walsh of the Tribune News Service added, “Coogler has delivered one of the best blockbusters of the year.”

The Hollywood Reporter credited the film’s almost-perfect reviews with helping to propel it to a “surprise victory” at the box office.

A Minecraft Movie was in a close second place with $41.3 million, Comscore reported. If the final box office numbers hold on Monday, Minecraft‘s theatrical dominance will have finally ended.

To date, the blockbuster starring Jason Momoa and Jack Black has earned a global total of $720.8 million.

Third place went to The King of Kings, an animated, faith-based movie that took in $17.2 million over Easter weekend. The Angel Studios release centers on a boy and his father who explore the life of Christ. The all-star voice cast includes Kenneth Branagh, Uma Thurman, Pierce Brosnan, Forest Whitaker, Ben Kingsley and Oscar Isaac, who plays Jesus.

Spy thriller The Amateur, starring Rami Malek and Laurence Fishburne was fourth with $7.2 million in its second weekend. A24’s Iraq war drama Warfare, rounded out the top five with $4.8 million in its second week of release.
