Tyler Perry and Keisha Lance Bottoms are bringing the political comedy series, She the People, to Netflix this May.

The streamer released the first official trailer for the series on Thursday, April 24.

Set in Mississippi, the comedy stars Terri J. Vaughn (Friday, The Steve Harvey Show) as newly elected lieutenant governor Antoinette Dunkerson.

“I think I can make a difference,” Vaughn says in the trailer. But the good ole boys in the state house have other ideas.

According to the official description, Dunkerson “runs a successful campaign and now must figure out how to thrive under a sexist and condescending governor while attempting to keep her family in line now that they’re all in the public eye.”

The cast also includes Jade Novah, Drew Olivia Tillman, Tré Boyd, Dyon Brooks, and Jo Marie Payton.

She the People was first teased during the “Next on Netflix” presentation earlier this year, when the streaming service unveiled its upcoming titles.

Perry serves as writer, director, and producer, alongside co-creator Niya Palmer.

Executive producers include Terri J. Vaughn, and Keisha Lance Bottoms, who served as mayor of Atlanta from 2018 to 2022.

The first eight episodes debut on May 22. Part 2 of the first season will be released later, on Aug. 14.

The series is part of Perry’s broader partnership with Netflix. In October 2023, the filmmaker signed a multi-film deal with the streamer, followed by a TV deal in February 2024. This is his second series under the TV deal. His first title, Beauty in Black, was recently renewed for a second season. The show spent four weeks in Netflix’s Top 10, reaching No. 1 in 28 countries by its second week.

As for films, the upcoming Madea’s Destination Wedding will mark Perry’s sixth feature from his partnership.
