Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé stumbled out of the top five at the domestic box office, after earning an estimated $5 million in its second weekend of release.

The total marked a stunning 77 percent drop from the film’s opening weekend ticket sales — and it was only enough for a sixth place finish, according to box office tracking company Comscore.

The concert film played in 2,542 theaters across the U.S. and Canada this weekend, for a per location average of $1,967. Last week, the AMC release averaged $8,271 per location for a $21 million total.

To date, the film has earned $28 million over ten days.

In comparison Taylor Swift’s The Eras Tour concert movie, which AMC also released, had raked in $130 million after ten days.

Even though Renaissance received a stellar “A+” CinemaScore from audiences and high marks from critics, the positive reviews weren’t enough to keep the film from falling off the stage in its second weekend in theaters.

“As great as Renaissance is a film, and it’s exceptional, it really only had limited appeal to Beyoncé’s hardcore fan base. Unlike Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour film, Renaissance wasn’t a mainstream pop culture moment,” Shawn Edwards, film critic for Fox 4 News in Kansas City, Missouri and executive producer of the Critics Choice Association’s “Celebration of Black Cinema & TV,” told Urban Hollywood 411 on Sunday.

As Renaissance sank… The Boy and the Heron soared.

The animated Japanese fantasy film opened in first place on a slow weekend in theaters, with $12.8 million in ticket sales, Comscore reported.

According to published reports, the movie made history as the first original anime release to top the domestic box office.

The film centers on Mahito, a young 12-year-old boy who struggles to settle in a new town after his mother’s death. When a talking heron tells Mahito his mother is still alive, he enters an abandoned tower in search of her, which takes him to another world. The semi-autobiographical movie comes from director Hayao Miyazaki.

Worldwide The Boy and the Heron has earned $89.7 million.

Elsewhere at the domestic box office, The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes came in second place this weekend with $9.4 million.

Godzilla Minus One held onto third place after taking in another $8.3 million.

Trolls Band Together was fourth with $6.2 million and Wish rounded out the top five with $5.3 million.

As previously mentioned, Renaissance slipped to sixth place with $5 million.

Year to date the 2023 box office has brought in $8.4 billion through Sunday — up 23 percent from this time last year.
