Netflix has released the first trailer for the new thriller, Luther: The Fallen Sun.
The action-packed video shows Idris Elba as Detective Chief Inspector John Luther, whose life is unraveling — yet he remains determined.
The trailer opens with Luther locked up in prison before he breaks free during a violent assault.
“I’m still a copper,” Luther says. But he’s warned to stand down or a tactical unit “will shoot you dead.”

Here’s the official description for The Fallen Sun: “A gruesome serial killer is terrorizing London while brilliant but disgraced detective John Luther (Idris Elba) sits behind bars. Haunted by his failure to capture the cyber psychopath who now taunts him, Luther decides to break out of prison to finish the job by any means necessary.”
The long-awaited thriller is based on the British crime series Luther from creator Neil Cross, which premiered on the BBC in 2010.
During the show’s five-season run, Elba won a string of awards for playing DCI Luther, including a Screen Actors Guild Award, a Golden Globe and a Critics Choice Television Award. The series also received multiple Emmy nominations.
The film version is directed by Jamie Payne from a script written by Neil Cross. Producers include Peter Chernin, Jenno Topping, David Ready, Neil Cross, and Idris Elba.
Luther: The Fallen Sun arrives in select theaters later this month and begins streaming March 10 on Netflix.
