A criminal defense attorney representing Jonathan Majors said Sunday the actor is “innocent” and “the victim,” following his arrest in New York City for the alleged assault of a 30-year-old woman.

“Jonathan Majors is completely innocent and is provably the victim of an altercation with a woman he knows,” attorney Priya Chaudhry said in a statement to Urban Hollywood 411. “We are quickly gathering and presenting evidence to the district attorney with the expectation that all charges will be dropped imminently.”

The NYPD confirmed the actor was taken into custody on Saturday, March 25, after the woman “informed police she was assaulted.”

Majors was charged with strangulation, assault, and harassment. He has since been released.

On Sunday, the actor’s lawyer offered new details about the incident, revealing it occurred inside a vehicle and was witnessed by others.

The attorney said evidence being collected includes testimony from the driver and onlookers, as well as two alleged written statements “from the woman recanting these allegations.”

“All the evidence proves that Mr. Majors is entirely innocent and did not assault her whatsoever,” Chaudhry said.

The statement also alleged the incident was the result of the woman having a mental health crisis.

“Unfortunately, this incident came about because this woman was having an emotional crisis, for which she was taken to a hospital yesterday,” the attorney said. “The NYPD is required to make an arrest in these situations, and this is the only reason Mr. Majors was arrested. We expect these charges to be dropped soon.”

According to the NYPD, the incident happened in the area of West 22nd Street and 8th Avenue at about 11:15 am.

“The victim informed police she was assaulted,” police said in a statement. “The victim sustained minor injuries to her head and neck and was removed to an area hospital in stable condition.”

Shortly after his arrest, a spokesperson for the actor said, “He has done nothing wrong. We look forward to clearing his name and clearing this up.”

Majors, 33, is a rising star in Hollywood, and currently has roles in Creed III and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.

He is also preparing to play former Chicago Bulls star Dennis Rodman in the upcoming film 48 Hours in Vegas, and was recently cast in Da Understudy, an upcoming film Spike Lee is in talks to direct about “life imitating art when the understudy of a Broadway production finds a role he’s willing to kill for.”

Majors previously had roles in The Harder They Fall; Da 5 Bloods; The Last Black Man in San Francisco; and the television series Lovecraft Country.
