John Wick: Chapter 4 pummeled the competition, earning an estimated $73.5 million for a first place finish at the weekend box office — and a record opening for the franchise.
The Lionsgate release debuted in 3,855 locations across the U.S. and Canada for a per theater average of $19,073, according to Comscore.
Of the previous three films in the franchise, John Wick debuted with $14.4 million in 2014. John Wick: Chapter 2 opened with $30.4 million in 2017, and John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum took in $56.8 million on its opening weekend in 2019.
Keanu Reeves returns to the title role in the latest film, which is directed by Chad Stahelski.

The cast also include Laurence Fishburne, Ian McShane, Donnie Yen, Bill Skarsgård, Hiroyuki Sanada, Scott Adkins, Shamier Anderson, Rina Sawayama, and the late Lance Reddick.
The thriller focuses on John Wick’s path to defeating The High Table. But before he can earn his freedom, he must face forces that turn old friends into foes.
In addition to the movie’s better than expected box office performance, it received excellent reviews from movie critics. The film currently has an amazing 95 percent positive score on Rotten Tomatoes with reviewers describing the action flick as “fantastic,” “remarkable,” and “a crazy ride.”
Elsewhere at the box office, last week’s leader Shazam! Fury of the Gods tumbled to second place after taking in just $9.7 million Friday through Sunday. The film’s 10-day domestic gross through Sunday is $46.3 million.
Scream VI was third with $8.4 million in its third week of release.
Creed III was in a very close fourth place with $8.36 million in its fourth weekend in theaters. It was followed by the action adventure 65, which grossed $3.2 million in its third weekend.
