Issa Rae Cast as Spider-Woman in ‘Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse’ Sequel

Issa Rae is joining the sequel to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

Plot details on the animated film are still being kept under wraps. But sources told The Hollywood Reporter Rae has signed on to voice the role of Marvel Comics character Jessica Drew aka Spider-Woman.

The star and creator of HBO’s Insecure will be teaming up with returning voice actors Shameik Moore (Miles Morales) and Hailee Steinfeld (Gwen Stacy aka Spider-Gwen) in the Sony Pictures Animation sequel.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2 will be directed by Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers and Justin K. Thompson, and is scheduled for release on Oct. 7, 2022.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse arrived in theaters in December 2018. The animated superhero film earned $375 million at the worldwide box office, and it won the Academy Award for best animated feature.

Rae has been busy lately. She is currently in production on the fifth and final season of Insecure. She also executive produces Robin Thede’s A Black Lady Sketch Show, which was just renewed for a third season. As previously reported, Rae is also developing the hip-hop comedy series Rap Sh-t for HBO Max, and she’ll be producing the reboot of documentary series Project Greenlight for the streaming service.
