Gran Turismo: Based on a True Story took a slight edge over Barbie in the weekend box office race.

Studio reporting showed Gran Turismo opened with $17.3 million, while Barbie was very close after banking another  $17.1 million in its sixth week of release, according to Comscore.

Sports action drama Gran Turismo stars Archie Madekwe as Jann Mardenborough, the real-life British video game player whose gaming skills helped him become an actual professional race car driver.

The film also stars Orlando Bloom, David Harbour, Djimon Hounsou, Darren Barnet, Geri Halliwell-Horner, and is directed by Neill Blomkamp.

Worldwide, the film has earned $53.8 million against a reported $60 million production budget.

Domestically, the Sony Pictures release opened in 3,856 locations for a per theater average of $4,487. On Friday, it earned $8.6 million, $4.2 million on Saturday, and is projected to ring up $4.4 million on Sunday, Comscore reported.

The numbers will be revised when final ticket sales are tallied Monday. Although the final tally could be affected by Sunday’s “National Cinema Day” event, with moviegoers taking advantage of deeply-discounted $4 tickets at more than 3,000 theaters nationwide as part of an annual effort to boost theaters following the COVID-19 pandemic.

For now, the numbers show Barbie in a very close second place. Last week’s leader, Blue Beetle was third with $12.7 million Friday through Sunday.

Oppenheimer took fourth place with $9 million in its sixth week, followed by Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem with $6.1 million in its fourth week.

So far this year, the domestic box office stands at $6.6 billion through Sunday. That’s up 25 percent from the same period in 2022, according to Comscore.
