For years, fans have been calling for a sequel to the 1997 film Good Burger.

Now it’s officially happening. Original stars Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell announced the news on the Friday, March 17, episode of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

“Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to Good Burger, home of the Good Burger — Part 2!” Mitchell excitedly told the audience

“It’s unbelievable. We’re going to be shooting it this summer and it will be out soon,” Thompson added.

The original film followed an absent-minded teenager and his new co-worker as they tried to save the aging burger joint where they worked from closing after a new burger restaurant opened across the street. The movie was based on a sketch from the Nickelodeon series All That.

Nickelodeon Studios will oversee production on the new film, which premieres later this year on Paramount+.

In a press release, the two companies said production starts in May.

“Packed with comedy, cameos and plenty of Easter eggs from the original, Good Burger 2 will bring the nostalgia of fans and a new generation of viewers together for another wild, hilarious Good Burger adventure,” said Shauna Phelan and Zack Olin, co-heads of Nickelodeon & Awesomeness Live-Action.

Added Tanya Giles, chief programming officer of Paramount Streaming, “Good Burger 2 will be a great addition to our 2023 programming slate and is sure to serve up everything All That fans and new viewers alike will enjoy.”

Paramount Pictures released the first film. The cast also included Sinbad, Shar Jackson, and the late Abe Vigoda. The comedy was directed by Brian Robbins.

The sequel will follow Dexter Reed (Thompson) and original cashier, Ed (Mitchell), as they reunite in the present day at fast-food restaurant Good Burger with a new group of employees.

Here’s the official description: “Dexter Reed is down on his luck after another one of his inventions fails. Ed welcomes Dex back to Good Burger with open arms and gives him his old job back. With a new crew working at Good Burger, Dex devises a plan to get back on his feet but unfortunately puts the fate of Good Burger at risk once again.”

Phil Traill (The Middle, Brooklyn Nine-Nine) is set to direct the film. Kevin Kopelow & Heath Seifert (All That, Good Burger) are writing the script and will additionally serve as executive producers. James III (Tyler Perry’s Young Dylan, All That) has also been tapped as a writer. Production of the movie for Nickelodeon Studios is overseen by Shauna Phelan and Zack Olin, Co-Heads of Nickelodeon & Awesomeness Live-Action. Brittany Cope serves as Nickelodeon’s executive in charge of production.
