The 75th Emmys paid tribute to TV shows of the past and honored performances of the past year.
Anthony Anderson hosted Monday’s awards from the Peacock Theater in downtown Los Angeles. The Black-ish star opened the show by singing theme songs from the classic comedies Good Times and The Facts of Life, with backing by a choir from his hometown of Compton.
Anderson was joined a short time later by musician Travis Barker on the drums, as they segued into the Phil Collins single “In the Air Tonight,” featured on 1980s police drama, Miami Vice.

The ceremony brought more nostalgia when cast members from All in the Family, Cheers, The Sopranos, Martin, Ally McBeal, and other classic shows reunited and performed bits from their shows before presenting awards.
Among the winners, HBO drama Succession, FX/Hulu comedy The Bear, and Netflix limited series Beef all picked up multiple awards.
Quinta Brunson became the first Black woman in over 40 years to win the Emmy for lead actress in a comedy series, after The Jeffersons star Isabel Sanford took home the award in 1981. Monday night marked Brunson’s second Emmy victory, after last year’s win for outstanding comedy series writing.
Niecy Nash-Betts received a standing ovation after being named outstanding supporting actress in a limited or anthology series for her performance in Netflix’s Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story.
The actress portrayed Glenda Cleveland, Dahmer’s neighbor who alerted police in Milwaukee about his crimes, but was repeatedly ignored.
“I accept this award on behalf of every Black and brown woman who has gone unheard and overpoliced, like Glenda Cleveland, like Sandra Bland, like Breonna Taylor,” Nash-Betts said through tears. She also thanked herself for working hard to succeed and never giving up.

Ayo Edebiri won the outstanding supporting actress in a comedy series trophy for her role as Sydney Adamu in The Bear.
With the three Black actresses picking up Emmys on the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, Anthony Anderson joked: “We are killing it tonight … This is like MLK Day and Juneteenth all rolled up in one!”
The Emmy Awards were originally scheduled to air in September, but the show was postponed because of the Hollywood strikes. It’s the first time the Emmys shifted air dates since 2001, following the September 11 attacks.
