Mean Girls was the coolest kid at the box office this weekend.
The high school-set film opened in first place after taking in an estimated $28 million between Friday and Sunday, according to box office tracking company Comscore.
The movie musical is expected to ring up another $4 million in ticket sales on the MLK holiday, for a four-day total of $32 million from 3,791 theaters across the U.S. and Canada.
The script comes from SNL alum Tina Fey, who also penned the hit 2004 original starring Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams, and Lacey Chabert. The first film opened domestically with $24 million and went on to earn $130 million worldwide.

The 2024 version had a reported production budget of $36 million, and is based on the Broadway adaptation of the first film.
The updated version follows new student Cady Heron (Angourie Rice), who is welcomed into the top of the social food chain by the elite group of popular girls called “The Plastics.” Queen bee Regina George (Reneé Rapp) rules “The Plastics,” along with her minions Gretchen (Bebe Wood) and Karen (Avantika).
The cast also includes Auli’i Cravalho, Jaquel Spivey, Christopher Briney, Jenna Fischer, Busy Philipps, Tina Fey, Tim Meadows, and Jon Hamm.
Audiences gave the film a “B” CinemaScore. It has a 70 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes after receiving mostly positive reviews from critics.
Elsewhere this weekend, the Jason Statham-led action film The Beekeeper opened in second place with $16.7 million Friday to Sunday, Comscore reported.
Wonka slipped to third place after taking in another $8.3 million in its fifth weekend in theaters. To date, the film starring Timothée Chalamet has earned $507 million worldwide.
Romantic comedy Anyone But You was in fourth place with $6.9 million in its fourth weekend. The animated family film Migration rounded out the top five with $6.1 million in its fourth weekend.
