‘Coming to America’ Sequel Adds Original Star Vanessa Bell Calloway

The list of Coming to America cast members returning for the upcoming sequel continues to grow, with the announcement that Vanessa Bell Calloway is joining the new film.

Variety broke the news Tuesday that the actress, who played Princess Imani Izzi, has signed on for the sequel titled Coming 2 America.

Calloway had a small role in the original 1988 film as the woman selected by Prince Akeem’s father for an arranged marriage. After Akeem decided to head to New York to find true love, he fell for Lisa McDowell, played by Shari Headley.

Headley is also returning for the sequel, along with Eddie Murphy, Arsenio Hall, James Earl Jones, Paul Bates and John Amos.

New cast members include Wesley Snipes, Leslie Jones, Kiki Layne, rapper Rick Ross, and comedian Luenell.

The new film follows Akeem, who is set to become King of Zamunda, but discovers he has a son he never knew about in Queens. Honoring his father’s dying wish to prepare his son to become crown prince, Akeem and Semmi (Hall) return to meet the unlikely heir.

Craig Brewer is directing the sequel and Kenya Barris wrote the script. Coming 2 America is set to arrive in theaters on Dec. 18, 2020.
