‘Cinderella’ Movie Cast to Reunite for 25th Anniversary Special on ABC

ABC will revisit the story of Cinderella with a primetime special marking the 25th anniversary of the movie starring Brandy and the late Whitney Houston.

The special titled Cinderella: The Reunion, A Special Edition of 20/20 airs Aug. 23, as part of Disney’s World Princess Week.

Original cast members Brandy, Whoopi Goldberg, Paolo Montalban, Victor Garber, Bernadette Peters, Jason Alexander and Veanne Cox will reunite for the broadcast. They’ll be joined by Billy Porter, Todrick Hall, Jade Jones and more to reflect on the impact of the film.

Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella premiered on Nov. 2, 1997, to 60 million viewers on ABC’s “The Wonderful World of Disney.”

It starred Brandy in the title role and Whitney Houston as “Fairy Godmother.” Natalie Desselle Reid, who died in 2020, also had a role in the film.

The movie was celebrated for its diverse representation and original music by the iconic songwriting duo Rodgers & Hammerstein, including “Impossible,” “In My Own Little Corner,” “Ten Minutes Ago,” “A Lovely Night,” “Do I Love You Because You’re Beautiful?”

It was directed by Robert Iscove, written by Robert I. Freedman, and choreographed by Rob Marshall. Whitney Houston, Debra Martin Chase, Craig Zadan and Neil Meron served as executive producers. Chris Montan was a producer, and Robyn Crawford was an associate producer.

The special brings back the original production team from Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella, including producers Debra Martin Chase and Neil Meron, and costume designer Ellen Mirojnick for interviews.

Cinderella: The Reunion, A Special Edition of 20/20 airs Tuesday, Aug. 23 from 8:00-9:00 p.m. EDT on ABC and streams the next day on Hulu.

Following the news special, Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella will air for the first time on broadcast TV in more than two decades.
