Despite the coronavirus pandemic, the show will go on for the 2020 BET Awards.

In a press release Wednesday, BET said it plans to broadcast a virtual version of the awards program via an “array of innovative techniques” and artist-generated content.

“The BET Awards are a seminal event – the biggest celebration of Black culture, Black accomplishment, Black excellence, and Black potential,” said Scott Mills, president of BET. “Recognizing the unique role the BET Awards plays for so many, and the challenging times we find ourselves in, we know it was more important than ever to deliver the BET Awards in 2020.”

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the awards and the network’s 40th anniversary. While adhering to safety guidelines, BET says the 2020 awards will deliver some of the same buzz worthy moments and performances fans have come to expect.

“At BET, we place the health and safety of attendees, staff, vendors, and partners first, which is why the biggest night in Black entertainment will go on implementing this innovative production direction,” added Connie Orlando, executive vice president of Specials, Music Programming & Music Strategy at BET. “Despite the challenges of today, we will deliver a show filled with larger than life, inspiring, empowering and entertaining moments, which have shown the magic of our culture for over two decades.”

The BET Awards will air on Sunday, June 28, 2020, at 8 p.m. EST. Orlando will oversee the broadcast and serve as executive producer along with Jesse Collins, CEO of Jesse Collins Entertainment. The nominations to be announced at a later date.

Unfortunately, fans will have to wait another year for the BET Experience. The three-day festival leading up to the awards was scheduled for June 25-27, but has now been officially canceled. The BET Experience will return in 2021, the network said Wednesday. All VIP packages sold to date will be available for a refund. More information can be found at BET.com/Experience.
