Jon Batiste goes from a career high to personal heartbreak in the trailer for the documentary American Symphony.
Netflix recently released the video, which shows the musician receiving 11 Grammy nominations in early 2022 as he learns his wife Suleika Jaouad’s cancer has returned.
“My first day of chemo, his Grammy nominations were announced,” Jaouad explains in the video.
“I won the biggest prize in music, come home and she’s back in the hospital,” Batiste shares.

The film features a new original song from Batiste titled “It Never Went Away.”
The documentary comes from director Matthew Heineman, and is produced by Mercury Studios in association with Barack and Michelle Obama’s Higher Ground Productions.
The movie premiered at the Telluride Film Festival in September, and is expected to be an awards season contender.
American Symphony opens in select theaters on Nov. 24 and premieres on Netflix Nov. 29.
