Moviegoers have spoken and A Quiet Place: Day One is a bona fide hit.
The third entry in the horror series opened domestically with an estimated $53 million — for a franchise best debut, box office tracking company Comscore reported Sunday.
Outside North America, the film earned $45.5 million for a global total of $98.5 million against a reported $67 million production budget.

The terrifying thriller stars Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o as “Samira,” who weathers an alien invasion in New York. She takes refuge in a nearby building as explosions unfold. But just as she asks what’s happening, Djimon Hounsou’s “Henri” warns her not to make a sound.
The cast also includes Joseph Quinn and Alex Wolff, alongside franchise veterans John Krasinski and wife Emily Blunt.
Krasinski, who rose to fame starring on NBC’s The Office, directed and co-wrote the first two films.
Written and directed by Michael Sarnoski, A Quiet Place: Day One is a prequel to A Quiet Place and A Quiet Place: Part II, and explains why the world suddenly went silent.
The first installment debuted with $50.2 million in 2018. The second film opened in 2020 with $47 million. As of Sunday, the three films have made nearly $700 million.
Elsewhere at the box office this weekend, Disney/Pixar sequel Inside Out 2 continued its winning streak and held onto the top spot. Between Friday and Sunday, the film grossed $57.4 million in its third weekend. To date the family film has made $469.3 million in North America.
Kevin Costner’s new film Horizon: An American Saga only managed to rustle up $11 million for a third place debut. The Oscar winner leads the cast and directs the Western, which also stars Sam Worthington, Sienna Miller, Jeff Fahey, Luke Wilson, Michael Rooker, Will Patton, Jena Malone and Giovanni Ribisi.
Bad Boys: Ride or Die took in another $10.3 million in its fourth weekend, for a domestic total of $165.2 million. Indian Telugu-language epic Kalki 2898 AD opened in fifth place with $5.4 million from 1,049 locations.
