The Woman in the Yard brought just enough mystery and chills to theaters this weekend to open in the top 5 and earn back most of its budget.

The Blumhouse and Universal horror film starring SAG and BAFTA nominated actress Danielle Deadwyler debuted in fourth place, after earning a projected $9.5 million from 2,842 theaters, box office tracking company Comscore reported. That averaged out to $3,325 per location.

The supernatural thriller follows Ramona (Deadwyler), a wife and mother who survives a car accident that claims the life of her husband (Russell Hornsby).

As she cares for the couple’s two children in their rural farmhouse, a mysterious woman shrouded in black appears in her front yard and it becomes clear her intentions are anything but peaceful.

Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, the film had almost no marketing. Yet it managed to earn back most of its reported $12 million production budget.

Still, moviegoers who saw the thriller only gave it a “C-” CinemaScore.

Over on Rotten Tomatoes, critics handed the film a 41 percent score out of 100.

“Even at a brisk 85 minutes, it’s a bigger slog than a day spent mowing the grass,” Nick Schager of The Daily Beast wrote.

“This ineptly made horror film is shrouded in lousy storytelling in making a thinly veiled, bungled statement about grief and tragic deaths,” added Carla Hay of the Culture Mix Online.

Although Jeff Ewing of Collider noted that Deadwyler delivered a strong performance.

The Woman in the Yard is gorgeously shot and features an excellent performance from Danielle Deadwyler,” Ewing wrote.

Elsewhere this weekend at the box office, the Jason Statham-led action film A Working Man debuted in first place with $15.2 million, Comscore reported. The Amazon/MGM Studios release played in 3,262 locations for a per theater average of $4,665.

Snow White slipped to second place with $14.2 million after opening with $43 million last weekend, marking a disappointing dropoff for Disney’s remake of its beloved 1937 classic.

The Chosen: The Last Supper — Season 5, Part One earned $11.4 million Friday through Sunday for a third place finish. The multi-season television series about the life and ministry of Jesus of Nazareth covers a single week of events, such as Palm Sunday, the Last Supper, and the betrayal leading up to the crucifixion.

As mentioned, The Woman in the Yard was fourth, followed by the A24 horror film Death of a Unicorn, which opened in fifth place with $5.7 million.
