HBO has unveiled the premiere date and trailer for season 2 of sports drama Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty.
The seven-episode season premieres on Aug. 6, HBO said Monday in a press release.
“This season hones in on the period just after the Finals in 1980 through 1984, culminating in the first professional rematch of the era’s greatest stars: Magic Johnson and Larry Bird,” according to the official description.
The trailer shows Boston Celtics star Larry Bird (Sean Patrick Small) challenging Lakers star Magic Johnson (Quincy Isaiah) on the court.

The series premiered in 2022, and was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for cinematography.
The season 2 cast includes John C. Reilly, Adrien Brody, Jason Clarke, Gaby Hoffmann, Jason Segel, and Quincy Isaiah. Sean Patrick Small joins the second season as Larry Bird.
Additional cast members include Hadley Robinson, DeVaughn Nixon, Solomon Hughes, Tamera Tomakili, Brett Cullen, Stephen Adly Guirgis, Spencer Garrett, Molly Gordon, Joey Brooks, Delante Desouza, Jimel Atkins, Austin Aaron, McCabe Slye, Thomas Mann, Gillian Jacobs, with Michael Chiklis and Rob Morgan.
Adam McKay and Kevin Messick executive produce for Hyperobject Industries. Max Borenstein is showrunner, executive producer, writer, and co-creator. Scott Stephens executive produces, along with co-creator Jim Hecht. Additional executive producers include Rodney Barnes, Jason Shuman, and Salli Richardson-Whitfield, who also directed episodes 1, 6, and 7.
Season 2 of Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty premieres on Sunday, Aug. 6 at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT on HBO and will be available to stream on Max.
