Willow Smith got real about why she sees polyamory as the relationship style that works for her, on Wednesday’s episode of Red Table Talk.

Willow sat down to discuss her views with fellow RTT co-hosts and family members, her mother Jada Pinkett Smith and her grandmother Adrienne Banfield-Norris.

Before the conversation started, the show played a voiceover from Jada explaining what polyamory is — engaging in multiple intimate relationships at the same time.

Jada then asked Willow how she came to the realization that she prefers to define herself as polyamorous.

“With polyamory, I feel like the main foundation is the freedom to be able to create a relationship style that works for you and not just stepping into monogamy because that’s what everyone around you says is the right thing to do. So I was like, how can I structure the way that I approach relationships with that in mind? Also, doing research into polyamory, the main reasons why monogamous relationships– or why marriage– why divorces happen is infidelity,” the 20-year-old said.

Through the remainder of the episode, the hosts discussed why monogamy might be an outdated mode of being in relationships and what would make Willow be monogamous. Episode guests included Gabrielle Smith and her married boyfriend Alex, who discussed polyamory as well.

With Gabrielle at the table, Willow said she feels empowered they are both Black women embracing being non-monogamous.

Willow told her, “I just wanna say, I’m so happy that you’re here because I see a lot of, you know, White people talking about this specific content. And when I came across your page, I was like — ‘Oh, my gosh. A young Black woman speaking her truth about this?’”

In the end, Jada said she just wants her daughter to find someone who loves her.

“Just like I told you the other day, as long as you are learning to have the greatest love affair with Willow… I’m okay with whatever you do,” Jada said.
