Wayans Brothers Working on ‘Scary Movie’ Reboot

The Wayans Brothers are coming back to the Scary Movie franchise they created in 2000.

Marlon Wayans, Shawn Wayans, and Keenen Ivory Wayans are reteaming to produce and write an original screenplay for a new installment in the franchise,  Deadline reported on Tuesday, Oct. 29.

“We couldn’t be more excited to be a part of the new Scary Movie and work with each other again. This is a franchise we created more than 20 years ago. We remember people laughing in the aisles and hope to see that happen again,” the three brothers said in a statement to the outlet.

It was first announced in April at CinemaCon that the horror spoof series would be rebooted, now the Wayans are confirming their involvement. 

Keenen wrote and directed the first two films, while his brothers Marlon and Shawn helped with the writing and starred in the movies. 

For the third film, which was released in 2003, Miramax brought in a new team to direct, though they used ideas from the Wayans. 

While a guest on the  “Club Shay Shay” podcast in September, Marlon said disgraced Miramax co-founder Harvey Weinstein stole not only his family’s ideas for Scary Movie 3 but the whole franchise. 

Now the mogul is behind bars for sex crimes, which Marlon considers poetic justice.

“God comes for you. All the toxic things you [Harvey Weinstein] did to me and my family, you took the franchise from us. Vengeance is mine. Sometimes you ain’t gotta do nothing because God’s gonna do it all — God’s revenge,” he said in the interview.  

“First of all, they took it from us and gave it to somebody else because we couldn’t make a deal. So, they gave it to somebody else, and they didn’t tell us. We read about it in the papers,” Marlon added.

Not surprisingly, the Wayans weren’t involved with the fourth or fifth films. 

The last installment, Scary Movie 5 was released in 2013.

Now the brothers are back together with Miramax for the upcoming sixth installment. The studio and the Wayans are also working with Paramount Pictures. Scary Movie 6 is expected to be released in theaters sometime in 2025.
