Tyler Perry is pushing back against critics following negative reviews of his latest film, Divorce in the Black.
Speaking on the July 23 episode of Keke Palmer’s podcast, Baby, This Is Keke Palmer, Perry made it clear he’s unfazed by the criticism.
“I’m like great, have your opinion,” Perry stated. “I live from this seat, tempered, measured, patient, prayerful, and disciplined… I step back, I count, I watch, I see which way I need to move; I don’t rush into comments.”

Perry’s new film has become a hit with audiences, reaching the number one spot on Prime Video’s U.S. movie list.
However, critics have been less impressed, with the thriller receiving a zero percent score on Rotten Tomatoes.
“You got to drown all of that out,” Perry emphasized. “If you let somebody talk you out of a place that God has put you in, you are going to find yourself in hell. I know for a fact that what I’m doing is exactly what I’m supposed to be doing.”
The director, writer, actor, and producer, who is known for his Madea franchise, said he remains committed to telling stories that resonate with his audience, sharing that he receives countless emails from people expressing how his work reflects their lives.
“Don’t discount these people and say that their story doesn’t matter. Who are you to be able to say which Black story is important or should be told. Get out of here with that bulls–t,” he continued.
Earlier this month, Cory Hardrict, lead actor in Divorce in the Black, defended the film during an interview with TMZ, saying: “The people love the movie. And we do it for the people. If the culture rockin’ with it, it’s all love.”
While critics may not be on board, Divorce in the Black holds a 75 percent audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
