“Not even these prison walls can stop me from dropping new music.” That’s the message from Tory Lanez, who announced on social media he’s recording new music while serving time in a California prison.
One of his associates posted an audio message from Lanez on the rapper’s official Instagram page Wednesday, July 24, with Lanez himself saying he’s been recording new songs while serving time on assault and weapons charges.
The “It Doesn’t Matter” rapper said it took 20 to 30 tries to make a decent-sounding recording over a low-tech prison phone, but it can be done.
“Me and my engineer have finally figured out how to record music over the jail phone and still keep the quality as professional as I had it on the street,” Lanez explained.

The Canadian rapper admitted “it’s crazy,” but said he’s determined.
“This is the first of its kind, and although God has shown me that this moment is only temporary, it speaks testimony to the fact that no matter where they put me, they can’t lock down my spirit, my ambition, my soul, my passion or my destiny,” he said.
Lanez concluded by saying: “I’ll be home very soon.”
Although “soon” may not come for a few years.
According to the Newport Beach-based Law Offices of John D. Rogers, a defendant convicted of a serious felony in California is required to complete 50 percent to 85 percent of their sentence, depending on the crime.
On December 23, 2022, a Los Angeles jury found Lanez guilty for shooting and injuring fellow rapper Megan Thee Stallion two years earlier.
Lanez, born Daystar Peterson, was convicted on three felony counts — assault with a semiautomatic firearm; discharging a firearm with gross negligence; and carrying a loaded unregistered firearm in a vehicle; along with the special allegation of using a firearm to inflict great bodily injury.
He was taken into custody immediately after the verdict was read, and held at the Men’s Central Jail in downtown L.A. before being transferred to North Kern State Prison — located about 145 miles north of Los Angeles in Delano, California.
Lanez’s legal odyssey began on July 12, 2020, when he shot Megan in the feet after a verbal altercation inside an SUV spilled out onto the sidewalk following a night of partying in the Hollywood Hills.
During the court proceedings, prosecutors accused Lanez of further traumatizing the “Savage” rapper by posting about the case on social media and inciting online violence against her.
Lanez maintained his innocence throughout the case.
After repeated delays, Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge David Herriford sentenced the rapper to ten years in prison back in August 2023.
“Actions have consequences, and there are no winners in this case,” Herriford said before handing down the sentence.
