Tiger Woods is currently recovering in a Southern Caflifornia hospital after suffering serious injuries following a rollover crash Tuesday in Rancho Palos Verdes.

The golf star’s team released a statement Tuesday night on Twitter thanking first responders and medical staff, after Woods underwent surgery at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in nearby Carson.

“We thank everyone for the overwhelming support and messages during this tough time. As previously communicated, Tiger was involved in a single-car accident earlier this morning in California,” the statement began. “He has undergone a long surgical procedure on his lower right leg and ankle after being brought to the hospital.”

The statement included comments from Dr. Anish Mahajan, chief medical officer at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, who said Woods sustained “open fractures affecting both the upper and lower portions of the tibia and fibula bones were stabilized by inserting a rod into the tibia.”

“Additional injuries to the bones of the foot and ankle were stabilized with a combination of screws and pins. Trauma to the muscle and soft-tissue of the leg required surgical release of the covering of the muscles to relieve pressure due to swelling,” Dr. Mahajan continued.

Woods is now “awake, responsive, and recovering in his hospital room,” the statement added.

The golf legend, 45, was rushed to the hospital after the SUV he was driving careened off of Hawthorne Boulevard at Blackhorse Road just after 7 a.m., according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

Authorities said Woods had to be extricated from the vehicle using special tools before he was transported by ambulance to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center.

The five-time Masters Tournament winner was in town over the weekend to host the Genesis Invitational at Riviera Country Club, which ended on Sunday.
