A day after Queen Elizabeth II died at Balmoral Castle in Scotland, The View hosts discussed her legacy on Friday’s episode of the daytime talk show. Sunny Hostin said it was sad that the queen passed away on Thursday, but noted the British empire was “built on the backs of Black and Brown people.”

Hostin said she previously lived and studied in London, but has issues with the United Kingdom’s history and with the late queen.

“She wore a crown with pillaged stones from India and Africa,” said Hostin. “And now what you’re seeing, at least in the Black communities that I’m a part of, they want reparations.”

The former federal prosecutor then called on newly-installed King Charles to offer reparations to people in countries colonized by the monarchy.

“It’s time for him to modernize this monarchy and it’s time for him to provide reparations to all of those colonies,” she said.

Hostin, who is of Puerto Rican and African American descent, said she was once a fan of the British monarchy. But over the years, her views changed because of the U.K.’s history of colonialism.

Joy Behar then stepped in and said, “You do know that Queen Elizabeth fought against Apartheid in South Africa.”

Hostin admitted, “That was one of the good things that she did.” Hostin also defended a since-deleted tweet by Carnegie Mellon University professor Uju Anya, who wished the queen an “excruciating” death.

“I heard the chief monarch of a thieving raping genocidal empire is finally dying,” Anya tweeted Thursday morning. “May her pain be excruciating.”

When Sara Haines brought up the controversial tweet, Hostin responded: “It was a thieving, raping, genocidal empire.”

The View posted video of the segment on Twitter. More than 100 viewers replied to the tweet and reaction to Hostin’s comments were mostly negative.

“Thank you Joy for your wisdom. Sunny is a downer,” one person replied.

“Really disappointed in Sunny Hostin disparaging the Queen today. Her children and grandchildren are in mourning… there is enough time to have discussions about the history of Colonialism. Not the day after she died. Devote a show to it but not now,” someone else wrote.

“This show was terrible. Disrespect and attempted shaming for the Queen what a shame. Have to rethink continuing to watch. Very sad,” another person replied.
