“As long as I’m boxing, I’ll be okay,” Ryan Destiny says as two-time Olympic gold medalist Claressa Shields in the first trailer for The Fire Inside.
From Amazon MGM Studios, the biopic follows Shields when she was just a high school junior in Flint, Michigan, and her journey to becoming the first American woman to win an Olympic gold medal in boxing at the 2012 Summer Olympics.
But her story doesn’t stop there.
As seen in the trailer, the boxer finds out winning a gold medal doesn’t exactly guarantee fame and fortune, and it’s even harder for women athletes to get sponsorships.
She holds her gold medal in a dark bedroom, disappointed by the lack of prospects.

All the teenager wants to do is help her mother financially.
“All of these people getting these endorsements, meanwhile, I can barely pay my mama’s rent,” Shields says.

Olunike Adeliyi, De’Adre Aziza, and Lanette Ware also star in the boxing drama.
Rachel Morrison helmed The Fire Inside, while Academy Award-winning director Barry Jenkins is the writer and producer.
The movie debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival on Sept. 7, and received glowing reviews from critics.
The Fire Inside will be released in theaters on Christmas Day.
